The Great Bend track teams, looking to improve upon last year, are hitting the track early in hopes of retaining their Western Athletic Conference title. Last year, the boys finished in a disappointing fourth place while the girls scored a victory.
“We are working on just finishing stronger overall, especially with the boys,” said head coach Bo Black.
Last season, Great Bend had several boys who made all-conference teams, including Matt Dobratz, Donte Adams, Josh Richardson, Tyler Saucedo, Robert Bieherle and Corbin Reed. Great Bend state qualifiers were Cory Monroe, Joseph Palacio, Richardson, Robert Shewbart and the 4x100 relay team of Bieherle, Reed, Adams and Dobratz.
Last season’s all-conference girls included Kalie LeShore, Caitlyn Murray, Alex Hartig, Kendra Reed, Samantha Peoples, Kaitlee Spray and Madison Moyd. LeShore, Murray, Hartig, Reed, Peoples, Spray and Moyd qualified for state as well.
The teams are pumped for another great season on the track. They hope to win the WAC championship and go to state. This year’s team features several returning athletes who competed at state.
“We have several returning players this year, including junior Alex Hartig, sophomore Kalie LeShore and seniors Caitlyn Murray, Madison Moyd and Kendra Reed,” Black said. “Many of them have competed at state and know what it takes to get there.”
Hartig is the defending state champion in two events, shot put and discus. Second-place finishers were Murray (in the 100-meter hurdles) and the 4x400 relay team of LeShore, Reed, Murray and Hartig.
